POST UPDATE:

I just read an article from a dermatologist’s blog (Dr. Bailey’s Skin Care Blog) that I follow:

Q:  Is a Clarisonic really “worth” its cost?

A:  Yes!  If you want clear and smooth complexion, the Clarisonic will most likely help get you there.  Here at Dr. Bailey’s dermatology practice, Advanced Skin Care & Dermatology Physicians Inc., we incorporate the Clarisonic into our aesthetician facial routines and our at-home skin care routines because we see both the immediate and long term benefits that the Clarisonic provides.

Clarisonic Mia, Where Have You Been All My Life?!

In my previous post What’s All the Hype About Clarisonic?, I summarized Clarisonic’s reported benefits of their Sonic Skin Cleansing System, as well as their different models, brush heads, and prices.  In today’s post, I am sharing my personal opinion about using Clarisonic Mia 2.  I chose this mid-range model ($149) because it has 2 speeds and I like the option of having a low speed.  The kit I bought from Beauty Store Depot included:

  • Clarisonic Mia 2
  • Universal voltage charger
  • Sensitive brush head
  • 1 oz trial size cleanser
  • Protective travel case

So how do Clarisonic’s claims hold up?

  • Cleanses Better ~ Wow!  My skin has never felt so clean in my life!  I am kind of grossed out now about unknowingly having dirty “clean” skin for years.  Manual cleansing left behind dirt, oil, and makeup trapped in my poor pores, yuck!
  • Healthier Looking Skin ~ Years of annoying blackheads seemed to disappear with even the first use of my Clarisonic Mia 2 and my pores looked smaller.  I’m not kidding!  Biore nose strips could go out of business if sonic cleansing takes off.  Blemishes have decreased dramatically, yay!
  • Gentle ~ The micro-massage action of the Clarisonic brush is very gentle.  I have never felt any skin irritation when using either the low or normal speeds.  I have only used the Sensitive brush head so far, so I cannot comment on the other brush heads.
  • Prepares Skin For Other Products ~ Another wow!  Now my skin soaks up my toner and moisturizer after cleansing because my pores aren’t clogged.  I sigh when I think about all those years when the absorption of my serums and moisturizers was hindered by oil and pollutants accumulated on my skin.  What a waste!  And I’d probably look younger now too!  Oh well, c’est la vie….. Better now than never, right?

Would I recommend the Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing System to a friend?  Absolutely!

Have you tried a Clarisonic?  What do you think about it?

What’s All the Hype About Clarisonic?

This article is based on what Clarisonic has to say.  I’ll share my personal opinion in a follow-up article.

What is Sonic Cleansing?

While cleansing is the first step in any skin care ritual, it is often overlooked.  Typical manual cleansing can leave behind dirt and oil trapped in pores.  This build-up can damage the appearance and health of your skin and keep your skin care products from working like they should.

Used and recommended by spas and leading dermatologists, Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems use a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly remove makeup 6X better than cleansing with your hands alone.  Cleaner skin is the first step toward healthier looking skin.  And healthier looking skin is smoother, more radiant, and more beautiful.

The Clarisonic skin brush goes beyond the skin’s surface to the deeper layers of the pores.  On account of its deep cleansing properties, the Clarisonic skin brush results in a visible reduction in the size of enlarged pores, leaving skin smoother and younger looking.  It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as helps reduce oily areas, dry skin patches, and blemishes.  The Clarisonic skin brush is waterproof and rechargeable, and has customizable brush heads.

Sonic Cleansing Benefits

  • Cleanses Better ~ Sonic cleansing is the essential first step in a healthy skin care ritual. Gently gliding across skin while cleansing thoroughly, the sonic micro-massage loosens and removes dirt, oil, and makeup from pores.  Trusted by dermatologists and aestheticians, the sonic action clarifies and revitalizes the skin without harsh chemicals.
  • Healthier Looking Skin ~ Without proper cleansing, drying detergents, pollutants, oil, and bacteria can damage the appearance and health of your skin.  Using Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems helps to remove impurities and clear pores.  And because there are no harsh abrasives or chemicals, Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems are a gentle, natural way to cleanse your skin.
  • Gentle ~ Sonic cleansing is the natural way to thoroughly cleanse all skin types – even skin affected by complicated conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, and acne.  Unlike many skin treatments that use harsh chemicals, the micro-massage action is effective, yet gentle enough to be used twice a day.  The Clarisonic brush is extremely mild even on very sensitive skin.  Those diagnosed with rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema find that they can use this product with virtually no irritation to the skin.
  • Prepares Skin For Other Products ~ Without proper cleansing, pollutants, oil, and bacteria accumulate on the skin, clogging pores and causing blackheads, blemishes, and dullness.  This may prevent creams, serums, and moisturizers from performing to their fullest potential.  Sonic cleansing better prepares your skin for skin care products.  Compared to manual cleansing, using the Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing System allows for up to 61% better absorption of Vitamin C.  Better absorption allows creams, serums, and moisturizers to work their best.

Directions

Gently move the brush using small, circular motions.  Use on forehead (20 seconds), nose/chin (20 seconds), and both cheeks (10 seconds each).

Tips

  • Prior to the first use, charge the Clarisonic handle for 24 hours.
  • Once a week, remove the brush head and wash the handle using warm soapy water to remove any residue buildup.
  • Replace your Clarisonic brush head every 3 to 4 months.

Stock Your Beach Bag for Summer

Beauty Store Depot has a sale on until July 1 ~ Save 15% on all orders over $25.  That’s a savings of $22.35 on the Mia 2, which I chose because it has 2 speeds.  I like the option of having a low speed.  I’ll let you know what I think of my new Clarisonic after I’ve been using it for a while.  So far I’m liking the sale price because it’s basically like getting a free replacement brush head.

Healthy Skin Needs Daily Maintenance

A good daily facial regimen involves keeping the skin cleansed and hydrated (twice a day).  At a bare minimum, it includes cleanser, toner, and moisturizer every day.  Scrubs and masques can be used a few times each week.  I will discuss each product in the order of application.

Cleanser:  Cleanse away oils and the impurities of the day.  Nothing will impact the quality of your skin more than simply maintaining its cleanliness.  Because skin repairs itself overnight, it must be cleaned and treated with essential vitamins and moisturizers before you go to bed.  That’s why it is important to remove all traces of pore-clogging dirt, oil, and makeup both morning and night.  No matter how tired you are, you should NEVER fall asleep with your makeup on!

Scrub:  Gently exfoliate dead surface cells to reveal healthier and smoother skin.  BeautiControl’s Exfoliating Polish (16283) is gentle enough to use every day.  I will say more about chemical and physical exfoliation in an upcoming post.

Exfoliating Polish

Masque:  Choice of masque will vary depending on your need (see chart below).  I personally love the luxurious self-warming Green Tea Masque (3587),which is phenomenal for blackheads.  First, I spritz on some Herbal Hydrating Mist (15198), which replenishes moisture.  Once my face is a bit damp, I massage the Green Tea Masque onto my face for a few minutes.  It puts you at ease with its soothing aromatherapeutic properties.

BeautiControl Skincare Masques

Toner:  Refine your skin’s pores, remove left-over makeup hidden deep in the pores, and restore your skin’s moisture barrier.

Moisturizer:  Moisturizer always goes on last.  TIP: The deeper a product goes, it goes on first.  You’re never too young to start taking care of your skin!  It’s much easier to prevent damage than repair damage.  At 18 years old, we stop producing moisture around the eyes.  Do we really need a different moisturizer for the delicate skin around our eyes?  Stay tuned to find out!
