MAC Toronto Saves the Day!

I recently had a scary makeup emergency while on vacation in Toronto!  In my last-minute packing rush, I forgot my trusty eye shadow trio at home.  Two weeks with no eye shadow?  Horrors!  The situation had to be remedied, and quickly before anyone got hurt.

You may be wondering: Why couldn’t she just go to the nearest drug store and pick up some eye shadow to tide her over until she got home??  Two reasons.  First, I order my eye shadow from BeautiControl, which isn’t available in stores.  Second, I’ve been disappointed with the low pigmentation of drug store eye shadows such as Revlon in the past, and didn’t want to spend money on something I didn’t really want.

As we were walking around Toronto, I saw a beacon of light – MAC!  Whew!  The universe could be set right again.  I eagerly scurried inside and explained my dilemma to the makeup consultant Ashley.  She said we could create a customized palette with 2 shadows or 4 shadows.  I usually use a trio of shadows from BeautiControl every day, but I opted for a two-shadow MAC palette (Soft Brown & Charcoal Brown).  Fortunately, I had managed to pack one MAC shadow (Orb) that I had been using at home in place of one of the BeautiControl trios I had used up.

How did my substitute eye shadow palette from MAC measure up?

Colours:   A-

The MAC colours I chose were fairly similar to my usual BeautiControl colours (see Sedona trio below), but not as warm.  They look more similar in person than they do in the pictures because different lighting was used.  I took the MAC picture in my Toronto hotel room’s bathroom at nighttime, and the BeautiControl picture in my living room in natural daylight.  Side note: I like the built-in mirror and convenient two-sided brush that comes from BeautiControl.  In case you’re wondering what the heck that is reflecting in the mirror, it’s a paisley pillow that was on my lap while I was playing photographer.

Long-lasting:   B+

Although MAC eye shadow is highly pigmented compared to drug store eye shadow, BeautiControl eye shadow is even more pigmented than MAC and lasts longer.

Price:   B-

MAC total = $48

  • MAC Pro Palette Eye Shadow  x2 = $6
  • MAC Eye Shadow/Pro Palette Refill Pan (Soft Brown) = $12
  • MAC Eye Shadow/Pro Palette Refill Pan (Charcoal Brown) = $12
  • MAC Eye Shadow (Orb) = $18

BeautiControl Mineral Shadow Trio (Sedona) = $22

I usually stock up on Sedona eye shadow (15035) when it’s on sale for 20% off, so that brings the price down to about $17, which is almost one third of the price for MAC.

I absolutely love MAC lipstick, but my go-to eye shadow is BeautiControl.  However, MAC was a good stand in on my vacation.  Thanks to Ashley at MAC Toronto for saving the day!  She kindly helped my friend Donna with eye shadow too (see pictures below).

What is your go-to eye shadow?  I’d love to hear from you!

Eye Cream – Fact or Gimmick?

Do we really need a different moisturizer for the delicate skin around our eyes?

In my previous post Healthy Skin Needs Daily Maintenance, I left you with a gut-wrenching skincare cliff-hanger:  Do we really need a different moisturizer for the delicate skin around our eyes?  In today’s post, I will finally reveal the answer.  Whew!  Drumroll please…..

Yes, we do need a different moisturizer around our eyes, which is the first area on the face to show signs of aging (lines and wrinkles).

Skin around the eyes differs from other facial skin in several ways:

  1. It is thinner, which makes it more delicate and vulnerable.  As we age, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and more transparent, resulting in more visible dark circles.
  2. It is more prone to dryness.  It does not contain oil glands that secrete sebum, the skin’s natural moisture barrier.  Dry skin is more prone to wrinkle development and makes fine lines appear more prominently.  Eye creams contain more emollients (moisturizers), which fill the spaces between skin cells, causing skin to swell enough to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  3. It gets a much greater workout.  Because our eyes are so expressive, the skin around them is constantly subjected to creasing when we laugh, smile, and squint, in addition to stretching due to puffiness.  When the skin around the eyes is void of hydration, the constant creasing of the skin will result in fine lines that can later develop into deeper wrinkles if left untreated.  Eye creams are thicker than facial moisturizers, so they will remain on thin, mobile skin better.  As we age, our skin produces less collagen, which is a protein that keeps skin strong and helps smooth out wrinkles.  Eye creams contain collagen-boosting ingredients (eg: retinol, antioxidants such as Vitamin C, and peptides).
  4. It is more prone to allergic reactions.  Facial moisturizers may contain ingredients (eg: sunscreens) that are too strong for the delicate skin around the eyes and cause stinging and burning.  Eye creams tend to be gentler than facial moisturizers.
  5. It is more prone to environmental damage.  Smoking as well as exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun can encourage the formation of wrinkles.

An effective eye cream should have the following properties:

  • An effective moisture barrier to prevent loss of hydration
  • A moisturizing complex to maintain the skin’s optimal moisture reserves
  • Ingredients to boost the production of collagen and elastin, the skin’s natural building blocks
  • High concentrations of multiple antioxidants to fight environmental aggressors and oxidation

BeautiControl’s BC Spa Facial Restructuring Eye Creme (16236) contains all of these components, along with an exclusive delivery system that allows each of the ingredients to penetrate into the layers of the skin where they will be most effective.  It helps maintain the skin’s hydration, prevent future damage, and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.  This cream is paraben-free and contains Hyaluronic Filling Spheres, which are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally present in our skin and joints.  Hyaluronic acid has been shown to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles by plumping skin and adding extra moisture.

NEW Microderm Abrasion For Face & Body!

I am SO excited about 4 brand new exfoliation products I just ordered from BeautiControl!  I’ll let you know what I think after I’ve been using them for a while.

Exfoliation is one of the most important treatments you can perform on your skin to help resolve certain skin problems, such as clogged pores, blemished skin, skin discoloration, dryness or rough skin – the signs of aging.  There are two types of exfoliants: chemical and physical.  Chemical exfoliants are applied and left on the skin for a short period of time, doing the work for you by dissolving away dry skin cells.  With a physical exfoliant, you do the work by using a tool to buff away dead skin cells. A combination of both physical and chemical exfoliants will give your skin the greatest results.

Do Heated Eyelash Curlers Really Work?

When I heard about heated eyelash curlers, I was skeptical.  I thought “If they worked, why didn’t anyone think of this a long time ago?”  I was curious yet unwilling to investigate the topic further, perhaps jaded by past disappointments of beauty purchases that didn’t deliver.

Last week, a girlfriend and I decided to check out the new Marshall’s store that opened in my area.  After spending an hour in the shoe section (of course!), I strolled through handbags on my way over to the beauty products.  Amidst the brightly-coloured nail polishes and hair scrunchies, I almost missed a small item in relatively plain black packaging.  But then my eye finally caught it: Wonder Curler.

Wonder Curler

Curiosity made me pick up the Wonder Curler box, but practicality made me put it back on the shelf.  I didn’t want to waste my hard-earned money on a potential gimmick I was going to regret buying.  But impulsivity and rationalization gave hope some legs to stand on.  After all, it was only $6.99….. maybe it would work and I’d have killer eyelashes.  If it didn’t work, it was only the price of a Starbucks.  Isn’t rationalization a wonderful thing?

The next day, I tentatively opened the box, put 2 AAA batteries inside the Wonder Curler, and read the instructions (that’s right, I am a woman).  They said that the red silicon pad that comes in contact with the lashes changes to clear when the temperature is ready for use.  So I turned on the Wonder Curler and waited….. Low and behold, the red silicon pad did change to clear in about 1 minute.  It took about 3 minutes for the very outside corners of the silicon pad to change from red to clear (only necessary for OCD people).  The instructions said to place the Wonder Curler on the lashes for 15 seconds.  To be safe, I did it for 30 seconds on each eye.  Guess what?  It worked!  Next, I applied waterproof mascara as I usually do.  My eyelashes stayed curled all day!

Today I decided to try the Wonder Curler when I already had mascara on.  After my mascara was dry, I used the Wonder Curler for 30 seconds on each eye.  The instructions said to repeat until the desired look is achieved, so I did another 30 seconds on each eye.  The result was a more dramatic look than using the Wonder Curler prior to mascara application.

Pros: lightweight, slender design, easy-grip, pretty pink accent colour, easily fits into a purse.  Cons: requires batteries, requires time to heat up.

So am I happy with my purchase?  At Marshall’s price of $6.99, yes.  That’s roughly the same price as a regular eyelash curler.  At the Los Angeles distributor’s price of $14.95 (www.leangelique.com), maybe not as happy.
