Exfoliation is the most important process in your skin care regimen. Unfortunately, it is the most often skipped component in a person’s beauty routine. It’s become my personal mission to increase awareness about this vital skin repair step!
Why exfoliate? Imagine the epidermis (outer layer of skin) divided into 3 sections (see picture of jar below). The grapes represent new skin cells (round, plump, fully hydrated). As grapes push toward the surface, they lose hydration and start to shrivel, like a raisin. As raisins continue to move toward the surface, they become flat and compacted on the skin’s surface, like cornflakes (dry, dead skin cells).
Skin tends to become dryer as we age. Skin hangs on to compacted surface layers to prevent moisture loss. But when skin hangs on to old cells, the production of new skin cells won’t occur. Exfoliation of cornflakes is necessary to improve cell turnover. How does this affect our appearance? Think about trying to put foundation on dry cornflakes. What is that going to look like? Eeew! In contrast, what would foundation look like on nice plump grapes? After reading this post, you will likely start noticing cakey cornflakes on other people’s faces and have to resist the urge to tell strangers to get rid of their cornflakes!
So now that we’ve discussed the “why” of exfoliation, let’s talk about the “how.” Skin can benefit from the synergistic strength of two powerful exfoliators:
Chemical exfoliation rapidly breaks down the “glue” or bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface, which will stimulate collagen and elastin, creating firmer, younger skin with continued use. BeautiControl’s Multi-Acid Resurfacing Peel (14644) is a clinical strength multi-acid formulation that provides gentle, powerful exfoliation, revealing smoother, younger skin in minutes. The pads are pre-soaked in a combination of alpha, poly, and beta-hydroxy acids and willow bark extract that encourages skin cell turnover. This potent formula reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin, and pore size at a fraction of the price of a med-spa treatment.
How would you like to look like you’re wearing foundation when you’re not? Microderm abrasion does that: it lessens fine lines and age spots.
Traditional microderm abrasion is an expensive process ($150 for one time at a day spa) provided by a trained aesthetician or nurse, who uses a small vacuum containing a stream of aluminum oxide particles to exfoliate skin. This process can cause stretching, broken capillaries, redness, and swelling of the skin. BeautiControl’s manual version of microderm abrasion has less chance of skin irritation. Microderm Abrasion For Face (10737) contains professional-grade aluminum oxide crystals that deeply exfoliate the skin’s surface to dramatically increase skin firmness and restore clarity. These are the exact same crystals you will find at your dermatologist, a day spa, or a med spa. But BeautiControl’s hand-held facial buffer enables you to gently exfoliate while controlling the amount of pressure applied to your skin. The facial buffer shaves the skin of surface cells that have been loosened by the Multi-Acid Resurfacing Peel. TIP: Concentrate on the line-prone areas of the face (forehead, crows feet, around the mouth, 11’s between the eyebrows).
Why do microderm abrasion? For the results: smoother-looking skin, reduced appearance of pores, age spots, skin discolourations, acne scars, fine lines, and wrinkles. You’ll see younger-looking skin in just 1 treatment. This process opens the skin to accept products better, which can now work faster. I will discuss additional skin repair products in upcoming posts. Now go do something about those cornflakes!
